The water management & irrigation institute (WMII) of the University of Gezira, Wad Medani, Sudan in holding a very important training seminar in Imperial Hotel. The topic of the seminar is "Operation of the Minor Canal" the target persons are the agricultural officers in the far main irrigated schemes in central Sudan, namely Gezira (800,000 ha), new Halfa (160,000 ha), Rahad (115,000 ha) and Suakin (27,000 ha). The total number of trainees is 180. The bulk comes from Gezira 120, and the rest come from new Halfa 24, Rahad 24 and Suakin 12. They will be divided into six batches of 30 each (20 from Gezira, 4 new Halfa, 4 Rahad and 2 from Suakin). Each batch will be trained for 3 full days. The first day of the program covers the following topic:
The second day covers measurement of discharges into minor canals and into tertiary canals. Measurement of level in minor and tertiary canals. This is followed by half a day field work. In the evening, the design of minor canals will be covered. In addition the ten commandments for good water management will be discussed. The evening ends with a presentation of water users associations (WUAs). The third day is allocated for weeds and siltation in minor canals. Half the day will be spent in the fields, (silt clearance, volume of silt removed, need for maintenance etc). The team of trainers is lead by Professor Hussein S. Adam the Dean of the (WMII) and Dr. Ali M. Adeel the Deputy Dean. Other trainers are:
